Boaters Rescued After Vessel Catches Fire Off Cayucos, California

by | Jul 7, 2025 | Maritime Law

A Fourth of July weekend boating trip off the Central California coast turned dangerous when a vessel caught fire and ultimately sank while under tow by the Coast Guard. Four people were rescued from the water after jumping overboard as flames erupted onboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the fire occurred approximately five miles offshore from Cayucos, as a 24-foot motorboat was being towed toward shore by a Coast Guard 47-foot response vessel.

Fire Erupts During Tow Operation

According to Coast Guard Station Morro Bay, the incident began around 9:30 a.m. when a distress call was received from a disabled boat located about 200 yards off Whale Rock in Cambria. A Coast Guard rescue crew was dispatched to the scene and initiated a tow.  By noon, while the boat was under tow, an engine fire broke out aboard the vessel. Responding quickly, the Coast Guard crew released the tow line and directed all four individuals to enter the water wearing life jackets.

The Coast Guard safely pulled the boaters from the water and administered first aid. Although most injuries were minor, one individual suffered burns and was transported to a San Luis Obispo hospital for treatment.

The vessel ultimately sank after the fire was extinguished by Morro Bay Harbor Patrol.

What Causes Boat Fires During Tows?

Though the investigation is still ongoing, engine fires during tows or after mechanical failure may result from a variety of preventable factors:

  • Fuel system leaks: Damaged lines or loose fittings can allow gasoline to spill or vaporize, creating an ignition hazard.
  • Electrical shorts: Faulty wiring or exposed terminals may spark near flammable engine components.
  • Overheating engines: Prolonged strain from towing or poor maintenance can trigger a fire, especially if cooling systems are compromised.
  • Improper repairs or modifications: Aftermarket changes can interfere with proper ventilation or increase fire risk.

Fires that occur while a boat is under tow also raise questions about whether prior damage, improper emergency protocols, or negligent maintenance played a role in escalating the danger.

Legal Rights After a Boat Fire Injury

Survivors of boating fires may face not only physical injuries, but financial burdens from medical care, lost equipment, or emotional trauma. When such incidents stem from negligence—whether by boat owners, maintenance providers, or manufacturers—there may be legal options for pursuing compensation.

Potential claims may involve:

  • Failure to maintain or inspect the vessel properly
  • Negligence in handling or responding to the fire risk
  • Product liability for defective components
  • Improper fuel system or electrical design

Even in cases where a government agency like the Coast Guard is involved in the rescue, private liability may still apply if the root cause of the fire can be traced to poor maintenance or product defects.
