Boating Accident Near Plaquemine Claims One Life, Injures Another

by | Jul 13, 2025 | Maritime Law, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

A tragic late-night boating accident on the East Upper Grand River near Plaquemine, Louisiana, has claimed the life of a 56-year-old woman and left another individual hospitalized. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is actively investigating the incident, which occurred around midnight on Friday, July 11, 2025.

According to LDWF, the accident involved a single 18-foot recreational vessel carrying two occupants: Jennifer Harrison of Gonzales and an unidentified male operator. Preliminary findings indicate that the boat struck a submerged log in the river, ejecting both Harrison and the driver into the water.

Emergency personnel recovered Harrison’s body and transferred it to the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office for an official determination of cause of death. The boat’s operator was rescued and airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge to receive treatment for injuries sustained during the crash.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the driver or confirmed the extent of their injuries. An ongoing investigation will determine what led to the collision and whether additional safety measures were overlooked.

Hazards of Nighttime Boating in Louisiana Waterways

Boating at night increases the risk of accidents due to:

  • Reduced visibility, making it difficult to detect obstacles such as logs, sandbars, or other vessels
  • Lack of adequate lighting or reflective gear on boats
  • Speeding or impaired operation when visibility is limited
  • Absence of navigational aids or markers in remote areas

In bayous and rivers like the East Upper Grand River, submerged or partially submerged logs are a known hazard, especially in low-light conditions. Operators have a duty to proceed with caution and maintain a lookout appropriate to the conditions.  There are a number of safety tips for nighttime boating.

Operator Responsibilities and Legal Considerations

Under Louisiana boating law, vessel operators are required to:

  • Operate at safe speeds, especially in restricted visibility or unfamiliar waterways
  • Avoid careless or negligent operation that could endanger passengers or other boaters
  • Ensure that passengers wear life jackets when required
  • Maintain proper navigation lights after sunset

If the operator of the vessel failed to follow safety protocols, or if the vessel was not equipped with appropriate safety gear, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such claims may seek compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical bills prior to death
  • Loss of companionship and emotional suffering
  • Loss of household services or financial support

Additionally, the injured operator may have personal injury claims depending on the circumstances surrounding the crash.

What to Do After a Fatal Boating Accident

For families affected by fatal or serious boating accidents, it is crucial to:

  • Obtain and preserve official reports from agencies such as LDWF or the Coast Guard
  • Collect witness statements and photographs from the scene
  • Determine whether the vessel met all safety and equipment requirements
  • Seek legal guidance to assess liability and potential claims
