Driver and Passenger Killed in Crash Near Groesbeck, Texas

by | Jul 27, 2025 | Auto Accident, Wrongful Death

A tragic two-vehicle crash claimed the lives of two Groesbeck residents on Thursday morning, July 24, 2025. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the deadly collision occurred at the intersection of FM 39 and State Highway 164 when a truck reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign.

Incident Summary

Authorities report that around 8:00 a.m., the driver of a Dodge Ram entered the intersection without stopping and struck a Honda sedan traveling along the highway. The Honda was driven by Jordan Trexler, 31, with Sheila Rutledge, 55, as the passenger. Both victims were residents of Groesbeck.

Tragically, both Trexler and Rutledge died at the scene due to the severity of their injuries. The driver of the Dodge Ram was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current condition has not been released.

The Texas DPS has confirmed that the crash remains under investigation.

The Dangers of Failing to Obey Stop Signs

Intersections pose heightened risks when drivers fail to comply with traffic control signs. Common contributing factors in stop sign violations include:

  • Driver inattention or distraction
  • Speeding or reckless driving
  • Failure to yield the right-of-way
  • Impaired driving or fatigue
  • Obstructed visibility at intersections

Even a brief lapse in judgment at a stop sign can lead to fatal consequences, particularly when one vehicle strikes another broadside, as may have occurred in this case.

Legal Considerations for Families After a Fatal Crash

When a preventable crash claims the lives of innocent motorists, surviving family members may have legal grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. If the evidence shows that the other driver failed to stop as required by law, they could be held civilly liable for the resulting harm.

Wrongful death claims can seek compensation for economic damages and non-economic damages.

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of companionship and guidance
  • Mental anguish and emotional suffering
  • Lost financial support and services the deceased would have provided

In addition to potential civil liability, law enforcement findings may also lead to citations or criminal charges against the at-fault driver.
