A tragic aviation accident occurred early Wednesday morning, July 23, 2025, near Thibodaux, Louisiana, when a crop-dusting helicopter crashed in a sugarcane field in Lafourche Parish. The accident claimed the life of the pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft. Authorities believe the helicopter struck a utility line while conducting aerial spraying operations.
Crash Details
The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. just south of Laurel Valley Road, approximately one mile off LA 308. According to Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson, it appears the helicopter’s tail rotor was damaged after clipping a high-voltage power line running through the cane field. This led the helicopter to spin out of control and crash.
Emergency responders confirmed that the pilot, later identified as Stanley Hebert Jr. of Abbeville, was killed in the crash. Hebert, described as a veteran crop-dusting pilot in his 60s, had a long history of agricultural aviation experience.
The helicopter was owned and operated by JBI Helicopter Services, a company based in Vermilion Parish that specializes in aerial applications for farming and industrial needs.
Investigations Underway
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) were notified immediately and are now leading a formal investigation. Officials expect to examine the crash site, helicopter maintenance records, flight logs, and any potential environmental or operational hazards that may have contributed to the incident.
Investigators will also be focused on:
- Whether the utility lines were properly marked and mapped
- Mechanical condition of the helicopter at the time of the crash
- Weather and wind conditions during aerial application
- The scope and safety of the spraying operation
There are a number of risks of crop-dusting helicopters. Crop-dusting operations often require precision flying in low-altitude, obstacle-rich environments—leaving very little margin for error.
Legal and Safety Considerations
While the final cause of the crash has yet to be determined, fatal aviation accidents involving agricultural aircraft often raise serious safety and liability questions, including:
- Were local infrastructure hazards like power lines adequately identified and marked?
- Did the operator follow all FAA-mandated safety procedures and protocols?
- Was the helicopter properly maintained and inspected before the flight?
- Could safer planning or ground coordination have prevented the incident?
When pilots are killed in aviation accidents during crop-dusting or other aerial work, their families may have grounds to pursue wrongful death claims, through third-party liability, depending on the results of the investigation.
