A tragic crash involving a commercial logging truck and a pickup claimed the life of a Louisiana man on Thursday afternoon, raising serious concerns about intersection safety and the conduct of commercial truck drivers on rural roadways.
According to the Louisiana State Police, the collision occurred at approximately 1:10 p.m. on July 17,2025, on LA Highway 21, just outside of Bogalusa in Washington Parish. A 2025 International HX520 truck was exiting a logging road and attempting to enter the highway when it crossed into the path of a 2010 Dodge Ram traveling southbound.
The Dodge, driven by 64-year-old Tommy J. Dollar of Angie, collided with the driver’s side of the International truck. Dollar sustained critical injuries in the crash and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Sadly, he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the logging truck was not injured.
Logging Truck Collisions and Liability Concerns
Logging trucks and other heavy commercial vehicles pose unique hazards, especially on rural or two-lane highways where visibility may be limited and intersections are often uncontrolled. In many cases, fatal accidents like this one stem from:
- Failure to yield the right of way
- Obstructed views when entering a highway
- Inadequate lookout or misjudging traffic speed
- Mechanical or brake failure on heavy trucks
- Negligent operation of commercial vehicles
The fact that the International truck pulled into the highway directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle may raise significant liability questions for the logging company or truck operator, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Claims After Truck Accidents
When a loved one is killed in a collision involving a commercial truck, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim against the responsible party. These cases often involve complex factors, including:
- Whether the truck driver was properly trained and licensed
- Whether the trucking company followed safety protocols and inspection schedules
- Whether road conditions or signage contributed to the crash
- Whether the vehicle’s entry onto the highway was safe and legal
A successful personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit may recover damages for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of income and financial support
- Medical bills incurred before death
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress and loss of companionship
