Incident Summary

A devastating boat crash in Bayou Coden, Alabama, has claimed the life of 49-year-old Wilson Johnson. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2025, when two vessels collided near the small fishing town southwest of Mobile. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the collision involved a 1998 19-foot Pro Line 190 operated by 35-year-old Barry L. Landry and a 2006 19-foot Carolina Skiff operated by Wilson Johnson.  Reports indicate the Carolina Skiff collided with the second boat.

Both Wilson Johnson and his passenger, 54-year-old Misty Johnson, sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to USA Health University Hospital in Mobile. Tragically, Wilson Johnson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital on July 10. Misty Johnson remains hospitalized. Landry, the operator of the Pro Line boat, was not injured.

Potential Causes of Boat Collisions

Boat collisions at night, especially in narrow or low-visibility waterways like Bayou Coden, can happen for several reasons. Investigators will likely look into:

  • Poor Visibility or Lack of Navigation Lights: Operating after dark requires working navigation lights and increased awareness. A missing or malfunctioning light can prevent another vessel from seeing and avoiding a collision.
  • Excessive Speed: Speeding reduces reaction time and makes it harder to maneuver safely around other boats or obstacles.
  • Impaired Operation: Alcohol or drug use continues to be a leading contributor to boating accidents, particularly in the evening hours.
  • Operator Inattention or Inexperience: Distracted or inexperienced boaters may not spot oncoming vessels or react quickly enough to avoid a crash.
  • Failure to Yield or Right-of-Way Violations: Just like on roads, boats must follow navigational rules, including yielding the right of way where applicable.

It remains unclear what exactly caused this crash, but the circumstances—two small boats colliding at night—raise serious questions about whether safe boating practices were followed.

Risks and Safety Considerations

Boating at night presents increased risks due to limited visibility, unpredictable water traffic, and reduced ability to detect hazards. Small vessels like the ones involved in this incident are particularly vulnerable in such conditions. Even at moderate speeds, collisions can result in severe injuries or fatalities.

Life jackets, proper lighting, and vigilant operation are essential in preventing serious marine accidents. Unfortunately, when one vessel fails to follow safe practices, the consequences can be tragic for others on the water.

Legal Rights After a Boating Accident

When someone is injured or killed due to the actions of another boater, legal options may be available. Surviving victims and the families of those who pass away in such incidents can often pursue claims for:

  • Medical expenses and hospitalization
  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Loss of income and future financial support
  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress

Determining liability typically requires a thorough investigation into the events leading up to the crash. Eyewitness statements, vessel inspections, accident reconstruction, and compliance with navigational laws all play a role in establishing fault.
