A deadly boating accident on the Colorado River claimed the life of a Southern California man on July 25, 2025, in an incident that has prompted a criminal investigation into suspected intoxicated boating. The crash occurred near Needles, California, and involved two vessels, one of which was adrift on the water at the time of impact.
Authorities reported that a 22-foot Cheetah deck boat was traveling downriver when it collided with an 18-foot Sanger boat that was not under power. The collision took place shortly after 5:30 p.m. near the Needles Bridge.
The crash left one occupant of the Sanger vessel, 38-year-old Weston Stewart of La Verne, critically injured. He was transported to a hospital but did not survive his injuries. No additional injuries were confirmed at the time of the report.
Allegations of Boating Under the Influence
Investigators have stated that alcohol consumption is believed to have been a contributing factor in the collision. The boat operator was arrested at the scene on suspicion of operating a watercraft while intoxicated and causing injury. He was later released on bail. The case remains under investigation.
Legal Consequences of Boating Under the Influence
Boating while intoxicated is illegal and can carry criminal penalties—especially when it results in injury or death. It can also expose the operator to civil liability for damages suffered by victims and their families. Operating a boat while impaired poses substantial risks due to delayed reaction times, poor judgment, and reduced coordination.
Victims of boating collisions involving alcohol may be entitled to file claims for:
- Medical bills or future medical costs
- Economic damages such as lost income
- Non-economic damages for pain, suffering, and emotional distress
- Funeral expenses and loss of support in fatal cases
- Potential wrongful death claim by surviving relatives
In certain cases, a product liability investigation may also be warranted if vessel malfunction or safety equipment failure contributed to the severity of the crash.
