Mid-Air Collision at Hollister Municipal Airport Leaves One Pilot Hospitalized

by | Jul 21, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Personal Injury

A mid-air collision between two small aircraft at Hollister Municipal Airport in California on July 19, 2025, has left one pilot seriously injured and raised significant safety concerns about airport traffic management and communication procedures.

Two Aircraft Collide on Runway 31

According to preliminary reports, a Cirrus SR22 G6 (N551SG) was on final approach to Runway 31, while a Van’s RV-8 (N926DT) was simultaneously departing from the same runway. Surveillance video reportedly shows the Van’s RV-8 striking the left horizontal stabilizer of the Cirrus from behind, causing the Cirrus to pitch forward and crash into the runway. The aircraft caught fire immediately after impact.

Bystanders and members of the Hollister Fire Department quickly responded, extinguishing the flames within minutes. Despite their efforts, the pilot of the Cirrus sustained serious injuries and was transported to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital. The pilot of the RV-8 was uninjured and managed to land safely on the remaining runway.

FAA Launches Investigation Into Air Traffic Coordination

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a full investigation into the collision. Based on initial evidence, the incident appears to stem from both aircraft using the same runway at the same time without adequate spacing or coordination. This raises questions about:

  • Air traffic communication protocols at non-towered airports like Hollister
  • Pilot situational awareness and visual scanning practices
  • The adequacy of runway entry and departure procedures

Accidents of this nature are rare but extremely dangerous, especially at smaller regional airports where air traffic is often managed without a control tower.

Personal Injury Liability in General Aviation Collisions

Injured pilots or passengers in general aviation crashes may be eligible to file a personal injury claim if the collision was caused by another pilot’s negligence or a failure in standard aviation protocol. In this incident, legal responsibility could hinge on:

  • Whether the departing aircraft failed to properly scan for incoming traffic
  • Whether the incoming aircraft had clear right of way on final approach
  • Failure to announce position or intentions over the airport’s Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF)
  • Any possible mechanical malfunctions or FAA airspace violations

If pilot negligence or a breach of safety standards can be established, the injured party may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost income, and long-term rehabilitation.

Legal Rights After an Aircraft Collision

Even single-pilot crashes can result in complex legal claims, especially when both aircraft are privately owned and operated. When multiple aircraft are involved, liability can extend to:

  • The other pilot, for unsafe operation or failure to yield
  • Flight schools or aircraft owners, for improper maintenance or supervision
  • Airfield operators, if signage, communication systems, or layout contributed to the crash

If the crash results in death, surviving family members may pursue a wrongful death claim.
