Two Killed in Fiery Plane Crash at Storage Facility Near Lowell, Michigan

by | Jul 22, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

A devastating plane crash occurred on the afternoon of July 21, 2025, near the Lowell City Airport in Vergennes Township, Michigan, claiming the lives of two individuals and setting a local self-storage facility ablaze. The incident is currently under investigation by federal aviation authorities.

Fatal Crash and Fire at Storage Facility

The small aircraft went down around 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Vergennes Street and Lincoln Lake Avenue, just north of Lowell. According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the plane crashed directly into a storage facility, igniting a fireball that sent thick black smoke billowing into the air.

By 9:15 p.m., authorities confirmed that two bodies had been recovered from the wreckage. The victims have not yet been publicly identified. Witnesses described the aircraft as a single-engine Van’s RV-14A, which appeared to nosedive between buildings moments before the explosion.

Eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage suggest that the plane banked sharply just before crashing. The force of the impact and subsequent fire destroyed multiple storage units and required a massive emergency response. At least 15 fire departments, including crews from Gerald R. Ford International Airport, were dispatched to the scene.

FAA and NTSB Launch Investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are leading the investigation into what caused the aircraft to crash. As of now, no preliminary cause has been released, and authorities have not confirmed whether mechanical failure, pilot error, or other factors contributed to the deadly incident.

Legal Questions in Aviation Accidents

In general aviation crashes like this one, investigators and attorneys will examine a number of key factors to determine liability:

  • Aircraft maintenance records and possible mechanical issues
  • Pilot certification and recent medical clearance
  • Air traffic control communications and weather conditions
  • Design or manufacturing defects, if applicable
  • Safety protocols at or near the departure and crash sites

Surviving family members may have the right to file a wrongful death claim if negligence played any role in the crash—whether by the aircraft owner, maintenance provider, airport authority, or a third party.
