A major product recall has been issued by Walmart after multiple consumers reportedly suffered permanent vision loss due to defective water bottle lids. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 850,000 Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles following reports of serious injuries caused by the lid forcefully ejecting when opened.
Recall Overview
The recalled bottles were sold nationwide at Walmart stores and online since 2017. The product features a silver stainless steel base and a black screw-on lid, with the Ozark Trail logo displayed on the side. The affected units can be identified by model number 83-662, which appears on the product packaging (not the bottle itself).
According to the CPSC, if food, carbonated beverages, or perishable liquids such as juice or milk are stored inside the bottle and left over time, pressure can build up inside. When the consumer attempts to open the bottle, the lid may eject with considerable force, posing a serious impact and laceration hazard.
Reported Injuries
As of the recall announcement, three injuries have been reported, all involving individuals struck in the face by the forcefully expelled lid. Two people have suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye. These incidents have prompted growing concerns about product safety and the long-term risk posed to consumers.
Consumer Instructions
Walmart is urging all customers to stop using the recalled Ozark Trail bottles immediately. Consumers can return the product to any Walmart location for a full refund, or contact Walmart directly for additional instructions on how to obtain compensation.
Product Liability and Consumer Rights
This incident highlights a serious product safety issue — and a potential failure in product design, testing, or manufacturing that endangered customers. Under product liability law, companies that design, manufacture, or sell defective products may be held legally responsible when those products cause harm.
Victims of defective consumer goods may be entitled to compensation for:
- Medical expenses and treatment
- Pain and suffering
- Permanent disability or impairment (such as vision loss)
- Lost wages or reduced earning capacity
- Emotional trauma
If you or someone you love was injured by a defective product, it is important to speak with an experienced attorney who can evaluate the situation and advise you of your legal rights.
