Deadly Cessna Plane Crash in Baldwin County, Georgia

by | Aug 27, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

On Saturday, August 23, 2025, in Baldwin County, Georgia, a twin-engine Cessna 310 crashed into a wooded area near the 900 block of Nelson Road, not far from Georgia State Route 212 and Milledgeville. First calls came in around 6:30 p.m. Witnesses reported the six-seat aircraft flying unusually low over Lake Sinclair before it turned about 90 degrees toward the southeast and disappeared from radar. When Baldwin County Fire Rescue reached the site, they found a debris field roughly 100 by 150 yards. The pilot, a Florida man in his 70s, and his dog were both deceased. The aircraft’s Emergency Locator Transmitter helped guide responders to the scene.

Federal investigators arrived on Sunday, August 24, to begin on-scene work. Officials noted that a Cessna 310 typically does not carry a black box, which can complicate reconstruction. Investigators will rely on ADS-B tracks and other flight data from avionics and devices. An initial NTSB preliminary report is expected after evidence is collected and cataloged.

What Investigators Will Examine

  • Approach path and terrain/obstacles. The low-altitude turn and off-airport impact raise questions often evaluated under controlled flight into terrain principles.
  • Pilot factors. Investigators consider workload, night or dusk lighting, and spatial disorientation risks during turns at low altitude.
  • Mechanical condition. Engine health, control continuity, and recent work are reviewed through logbooks and teardown to identify issues tied to aircraft maintenance.
  • Digital and witness evidence. ADS-B plots, phone/location data, and bystander videos can be pivotal evidence for timing, altitude, speed, and the final turn.

Guidance for Families After a Fatal Aviation Incident
Next of kin can pursue a wrongful death claim while the federal investigation unfolds. Preserving documents, photos, and any electronic recordings from witnesses or nearby cameras helps align the civil case with the technical record that will emerge from the NTSB docket.
