On August 23, 2025, in El Paso, Texas, a semi-truck crashed and caught fire on I-10 near the Fabens exit. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said both eastbound and westbound lanes closed while firefighters worked the blaze. Traffic was rerouted through Fabens to Alameda Avenue and back to I-10 via the O.T. Smith exit. Westbound lanes reopened around 6:15 p.m. Saturday. Eastbound lanes reopened about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to TxDOT. The Sheriff’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit responded. The cause and the driver’s condition have not been released.
Possible safety factors in a highway truck fire
18-wheeler fires and loss-of-control crashes can stem from several issues. Investigators often consider:
- Tire failures. A sudden tire blowout can rip wiring, rupture fuel or oil lines, and make a driver lose control.
- Brake problems. Overheated or defective brakes can ignite surrounding materials or reduce stopping power. Learn more about brake failure.
- Driver fatigue. Long hours raise the risk of lane departures and delayed reaction times. See our guide on driver fatigue.
- Inspection and upkeep. Faults missed on a required pre-trip inspection may allow heat, fluid, or mechanical issues to worsen on the road.
How crash investigators reconstruct events
Reconstruction focuses on physical evidence and required records. Downloaded black box data (ECM/EDR) can show speed, braking, and throttle before impact. Driver logs and fuel/scale receipts help verify hours and rest. Inspectors also examine tires, brake components, lighting, and any cargo shift or fluid leaks to determine the sequence of failure.
Common injuries in 18-wheeler crashes and fires
Even when no fatalities are reported at the scene, occupants and bystanders can suffer serious trauma. These include burns and inhalation injuries, orthopedic fractures, and spinal injury from high-energy impacts. Early evaluation and documentation protect health and preserve evidence.
