Recreational Boat Capsizes on Lake Michigan Near South Haven

by | Aug 3, 2025 | Maritime Law

Just before sunset on July 31, a Zodiac inflatable boat overturned in rough Lake Michigan surf off South Haven’s South Beach. Two occupants—both wearing life jackets—and their small craft were tossed into choppy water only yards from shore. Nearby surfers, boaters, and beach-safety staff raced in, to steady the victims until rescuers could haul them aboard another vessel. Luckily no serious injuries were reported, but the incident highlights the risks of small boats capsizing.

Why Small Boats Capsize

Even a lightweight inflatable can flip with little warning when several risk factors collide:

  • Risk of capsizing rises sharply when steep, wind-driven waves hit a beam (side-on) and shift the center of gravity.
  • Sudden gusts or turning too quickly can leave an inflatable broadside to oncoming swells.
  • Excessive speed in lumpy water reduces time to react and makes dips between waves feel like potholes.
  • Loose gear or passengers crowding one side can destabilize a shallow-draft hull.

Good seamanship—slowing down, taking seas at a 45-degree angle, and stowing cargo low and centered—keeps many of these incidents from becoming tragedies.

Potential Injuries

Cold water and hard knocks against an overturned hull can produce hypothermia, lacerations, or head trauma. In more serious mishaps, occupants face drowning or serious and catastrophic injuries if they are struck by their own propeller or another boat arriving to help.

Your Rights After a Recreational Boating Accident

If a capsize stems from a negligent operator, rental agency, or manufacturing defect, injured passengers may pursue:

  • Negligence claims for failing to adjust speed or course in hazardous wave conditions.
  • Product liability actions when a faulty engine cutoff switch or inflatable collar fails.
  • Recovery of medical expenses, lost wages, and other economic damages—plus non-economic losses such as emotional distress.

A jury can potentially examine witness statements, weather records, and Coast Guard reports to establish liability; acting quickly preserves this critical evidence.

Safeguard Your Family’s Day on the Lake

  • Wear U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets at all times.
  • Check marine forecasts; if winds top 15 mph or waves exceed two feet, postpone the trip.
  • Balance passengers fore-and-aft and side-to-side; avoid abrupt throttle or steering inputs.
  • Keep emergency contacts and a waterproof phone pouch handy—signals often remain solid near populated beaches.
