Teen Killed, Another Injured in Boat–Jet Ski Collision on Pamlico River in North Carolina

| Aug 27, 2025 | Maritime Law, Wrongful Death

Incident description
On August 22, 2025, in Beaufort County, North Carolina, a 25-foot boat struck a jet ski on the Pamlico River near the Mimosa Shores area of Washington. Two teens were on the jet ski. A 13-year-old passenger died from injuries. The 14-year-old operator had minor injuries. The 69-year-old boat operator called 911. Investigators with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors. The crash remains under investigation.

What investigators will review in boat–PWC collisions
Visibility and traffic patterns come first. In narrow waterways, the hazards of narrow channels can limit time to react. Speed and wake conditions matter, too. Sudden crossings and boat wakes can upset smaller craft; see how wake turbulence and excessive speed reduce control and increase stopping distance. Investigators also look at injury mechanisms. Propellers often cause severe lacerations, which is why danger of propellers is a recurring focus in small-vessel crashes. Equipment checks follow—lights, kill-switch use, and any damage that explains loss of control.

Legal options for affected families
A fatal recreational boating accident can support a civil claim when evidence shows another party’s fault. Key proof can include scene photos, AIS or GPS tracks, maintenance records, and witness statements; learn what evidence often makes the difference. Eligible relatives may file a wrongful death claim seeking financial and human losses recognized by law. Deadlines apply, so review the statute of limitations that could affect your case.
