Three Injured After Flight School Plane Crashes in Brookhaven, Georgia

by | Aug 13, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Personal Injury

Three people were hospitalized early Saturday morning after a small plane belonging to a flight school crashed into the front yard of a home in Brookhaven, Georgia. The crash, which occurred just after midnight, caused damage to utility lines but spared nearby residences from structural harm. Fortunately, all three occupants—one pilot and two passengers—survived the accident, although each sustained personal injuries.

Incident Overview

The crash took place at approximately 12:25 a.m. on August 9, 2025, near the intersection of Clairmont Road and 9th Street in Brookhaven, not far from the Peachtree-DeKalb Airport. According to police and fire officials, the aircraft involved was a Piper PA-28-151 Cherokee Warrior registered to All2Fly Flight School.

Brookhaven Police, Chamblee Police, and the DeKalb County Fire Department responded to the scene. The three individuals aboard the plane were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. Authorities confirmed all were conscious, alert, and breathing when first responders arrived.

Circumstances of the Crash

The plane had taken off from Peachtree-DeKalb Airport at 10:51 p.m. Friday for a training flight to Rome, Georgia. Upon returning to the Atlanta area, it performed multiple “touch-and-go” landings—standard procedures in flight training—before crashing. Witnesses said the aircraft struck several trees before coming to rest in the front yard of a residential property.

While no homes were physically damaged, the crash did take down power lines and cause temporary outages. Georgia Power restored service later that morning. The plane and its debris were removed by ATL Air Recovery and transported to a storage facility in Griffin for further investigation.

Common Causes of Small Plane Crashes

Accidents involving small aircraft like the Piper Cherokee can stem from various issues, especially during training exercises. Typical causes include:

  • Pilot error, such as misjudging altitude or speed during landing maneuvers.
  • Mechanical failures, especially in aging training aircraft used frequently by flight schools.
  • Weather-related visibility issues, even on short-range or local flights, resulting in low-visibility landings.
  • Airspace congestion, particularly near busy metro-area airports.

Crashes during flight training present unique risks because they often involve student pilots and instructors with limited experience managing emergencies.

Who May Be Held Liable?

Multiple parties may share legal responsibility in a training flight crash. Liability could rest with:

  • The flight school, if it failed to maintain the aircraft properly or provided inadequate instruction.
  • The aircraft owner, if maintenance records show unaddressed mechanical issues.
  • The pilot or instructor, depending on their role and certification level at the time of the crash.
  • Aircraft manufacturers, in cases involving defective equipment.

Victims injured in small plane crashes may pursue a personal injury lawsuit or, in fatal cases, surviving family members may file a wrongful death claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a touch-and-go landing?
A touch-and-go landing involves landing on a runway and immediately taking off again without coming to a full stop. It’s a common part of flight training to build repetition and experience.

Can flight schools be held responsible for crashes?
Yes. If the crash is linked to training procedures, aircraft maintenance issues, or negligent supervision, the school can be held legally accountable.

Do victims have to prove fault to recover damages?
Yes. In a personal injury case, the injured party must show that another party’s negligence contributed to the crash. This includes presenting evidence of a failure to meet industry safety standards.  In cases with especially bad conduct, it may be appropriate to seek a claim for gross negligence.
