Two Seriously Injured After Small Plane Crashes Near New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport

by | Aug 30, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Personal Injury

Incident description: On August 29, 2025, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, a small aircraft crashed just outside New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport around 10:30 a.m., near South Street and Clarendon Avenue. Police and fire crews found two people aboard; both were transported to Halifax Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. The airport briefly closed, then reopened after the scene was stabilized.

The FAA will investigate the cause. Early details from the field indicate the airplane—a Cessna 172H Skyhawk (N1607F)—came to rest inverted after contacting trees and shrubs while on approach to Runway 29. Flight tracking shows the airplane departed Runway 29 around 10:20 a.m. and crashed on approach roughly five minutes later.

What investigators typically examine after a runway-environment crash

Federal and local investigators will map the debris path and review cockpit communications with air traffic control (see our overview of air traffic control errors), maintenance status, and available flight data captured by avionics and ADS-B. On an approach close to the ground, they also consider aerodynamic factors common in GA accidents, including aerodynamic stall risk during turns to final, as well as wind, shear, or convective bumpiness that can upset a stabilized approach. An NTSB preliminary report typically issues within a few weeks and can clarify the flight path, weather, and any mechanical or operational issues identified early in the process.

What to do if you witnessed or were involved

If you were on scene or impacted by the response, preserve photos, video, and names of witnesses; these are key pieces of evidence in any later proceeding. Anyone evaluated at the hospital should seek immediate medical attention follow-ups and keep all discharge papers and imaging results. Families tracking the case can watch for the NTSB preliminary report and request records once they’re available.
