Fatal Small Plane Crash Near Goheen Airport in Clark County, Washington

by | Sep 27, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

On September 26, 2025, a small single-engine airplane crashed in a field near Goheen Airport, north of Battle Ground, Washington. Fire crews arrived within minutes, knocked down the post-impact fire, and kept flames from spreading to nearby trees and structures. There were no survivors.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office secured the site. Federal authorities, including the FAA and NTSB, are conducting the investigation. Identities and additional flight details have not been released at this time.

Why Crashes Happen Near Small Airports

Small, public-use fields like Goheen handle light aircraft with limited runway length, nearby obstacles, and mixed pilot experience. Investigators often consider whether landing on a short runway magnified any handling or energy-management error. They also look for power-loss scenarios that can force an off-airport landing including engine failure, and weather factors like wind shifts or low ceilings that complicate approach paths. When conditions require navigation solely by reference to instruments, training and compliance with instrument flight rules can also be relevant.

What Investigators Will Examine

The NTSB will document the wreckage, flight path, and fire patterns and request maintenance and pilot records. If the aircraft carried recoverable avionics or portable devices, they will seek to recover flight data. Component teardown can reveal pre-impact aircraft maintenance or part issues. A NTSB preliminary report is typically issued within weeks, followed by a more comprehensive final report.

Liability & Wrongful Death Considerations

Depending on the facts, responsibility may involve the pilot, the aircraft owner/operator, a maintenance provider, an airfield entity, or a manufacturer (if a defect or failure contributed), which can give rise to product liability claims. Surviving family members may pursue a wrongful death claim seeking both economic and non-economic damages. When conduct crosses the line into egregious disregard for safety, punitive damages may be available under applicable law.

Early Steps Families Can Take

  • Secure critical records immediately. A targeted preservation letter can help protect maintenance logs, ownership and insurance information, avionics downloads, and any surveillance or witness footage.
  • Track deadlines. Aviation claims are governed by state and federal rules; understanding the statute of limitations early prevents forfeiting rights.
  • Engage experienced counsel. A small plane crash lawyer coordinates accident-reconstruction experts, handles insurer communications, and guides families through parallel NTSB and civil processes.
