On October 14, 2025, a westbound four-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 in Gregg County, Texas left the box-van driver, Zuo Kpogba, 42, dead at the scene. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a box van rear-ended a truck-tractor/semi-trailer, became disabled in the roadway, and was then struck by a second 18-wheeler, which pushed the van into the path of a Forney ISD school bus. The bus was occupied; no injuries were reported among passengers or the other drivers. Troopers responded just before 9:25 p.m. and closed lanes while they investigated and cleared debris.
Authorities have not released additional information on contributing factors. The DPS investigation is ongoing.
Liability & Third Parties in Chain-Reaction Interstate Crashes
Rear-end dynamics and following distance. Chain-reaction crashes often begin with insufficient space for heavy vehicles to stop. Investigators compare speeds, lane positions, and lighting to see whether a driver failed to maintain adequate spacing or lookout. Research on rear-end collision risk shows how mass, speed, and reaction time magnify forces in multi-vehicle impacts.
Dispatch pressure, fatigue, and hours compliance. Late-evening freight runs can overlap with circadian lows. Carriers must schedule routes within federal limits; records and ELD data are reviewed to test compliance with hours of service (HOS). If logs show missed rest or unrealistic dispatch windows, that can shift fault toward the carrier.
Disabled-vehicle protection. Once a vehicle is disabled in a travel lane, visibility and warnings become critical. Heavy trucks have specific triangle/flaring duties; passenger and light commercial vehicles rely on hazard flashers and prompt removal. Investigators examine whether required warnings were deployed fast enough to alert following traffic.
Potential third-party responsibility. Beyond drivers and carriers, responsibility can reach maintenance contractors or parts manufacturers when a braking, lighting, or conspicuity defect contributes to a crash. Where evidence suggests a defect, claims may invoke product liability principles alongside negligence theories.
For Surviving Families: Key Civil Options
When a crash results in a death, spouses and close relatives may pursue a wrongful death claim to address loss of financial support, companionship, and mental anguish. An estate claim can also address funeral costs and any conscious pain and suffering before passing. Because crucial electronic data and carrier documents can be overwritten quickly, families should consider sending a preservation letter to secure EDR downloads, dash-cam video, maintenance files, and dispatch/ELD records.
