One Worker Killed and Another Rescued After Trench Collapse in Yarmouth, Massachusetts

by | Nov 19, 2025 | Construction Accident, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

A deadly construction-site emergency unfolded in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, on November 18, 2025, when a trench collapsed during an active sewer replacement project, killing one worker and trapping another for several hours. Emergency crews were called to the site at 152 South Shore Drive around 8:50 a.m., where multiple workers had been inside the excavation when the earthen walls gave way.

According to reports, one worker managed to escape immediately after the collapse, while another—who had jumped in to assist—became buried up to his knees but was able to free himself with help from first responders. Both surviving workers were transported for medical evaluation.

The most critically trapped worker remained buried for more than four hours as rescue teams worked to reach him. Rescue crews used ladder trucks, ropes, pulleys, and confined-space rescue equipment to stabilize the area and prevent further collapse. Despite the hazardous environment, rescuers were able to maintain communication with the trapped man, who was alert and able to grasp a rescuer’s hand before being transferred to a waiting MedFlight. He was airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital; his current condition has not been disclosed.

A third worker did not survive the incident, and officials confirmed his death at the scene.

OSHA officials arrived on-site and confirmed an ongoing federal investigation. The investigation will likely focus on attempted to protect the workers from cave-in hazards—a known risk in trench work and a core focus of trench collapse investigations.

Why Trench Work Is Exceptionally Dangerous

Trench operations rank among the most hazardous activities in the construction industry. Soil can weigh more than 3,000 pounds per cubic yard, and even a minor collapse may bury a worker before they can react. When trenches are not properly protected, workers face risks associated with:

  • unstable soil conditions
  • inadequate shielding or shoring
  • vibration from nearby equipment
  • improperly sloped trench walls
  • water accumulation, erosion, or saturation

These dangers are magnified on large-scale utility or wastewater projects, especially when multiple crews are working simultaneously. Improper planning or oversight can also intersect with broader construction equipment hazards or site-coordination failures.

Potential Factors Under Review in the Yarmouth Collapse

Federal investigators may examine whether the contractor followed established excavation safety protocols, including:

  • installation of required trench boxes or shields
  • soil assessments and testing
  • safe access and egress points
  • sloping or benching requirements
  • equipment vibrations near the trench
  • adequacy of the site’s protective systems

OSHA will likely review previous violations involving the construction company and evaluate whether company practices contributed to unsafe conditions. For families and injured workers, determining whether employers followed mandated OSHA trench guidelines can play a critical role in assessing liability, especially where gross negligence or repeated safety failures are alleged.

When injuries are severe, workers may require extensive medical care, sometimes involving treatment for crush injuries, fractures, or complications such as traumatic brain injury. Recovery can also involve long-term losses that fall into categories of economic damages and non-economic damages.

Legal Considerations After a Trench Collapse

Victims of trench collapses often face complex recovery needs involving emergency treatment, rehabilitation, and loss of income. When a fatality occurs, families may consider their rights under workplace-injury laws and potential claims depending on the employer’s safety practices, federal violations, or equipment failures.

Early preservation of evidence can be critical—especially documentation related to excavation plans, jobsite safety audits, and communication logs.

Speaking with a construction accident lawyer can help families understand the legal landscape, including investigations by OSHA and the role of regulatory findings in claims involving trench failures.
