by | Feb 5, 2026 | Auto Accident, Wrongful Death

A fatal car accident on Interstate 10 in El Paso, Texas, claimed the life of a young man and left another driver injured after a wrong-way collision late Tuesday night. According to the El Paso Police Department, the crash occurred on February 4, 2026, on I-10 West near the Mesa Street exit and involved a head-on impact between two vehicles traveling in opposite directions.

Authorities identified the man who died as 25-year-old Jesus Chico Jr. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver involved suffered minor injuries and remained at the location as officers conducted their investigation. According to the El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit, the crash occurred when a 2017 Ford Mustang was traveling the wrong direction on I-10 West. The Mustang collided head-on with a 2009 Honda Civic driven by Chico.

Alcohol, Impairment, and Wrong-Way Driving

Wrong-way highway crashes are among the most dangerous traffic incidents because they often occur at high speeds and leave drivers with little time to react. These collisions frequently result in serious and catastrophic injuries or fatalities, even when one of the drivers is obeying traffic laws.

Police confirmed that the DWI Task Force was called in to assist with the investigation, indicating that impairment may be a factor under review. The investigation remains ongoing.

Wrong-way crashes on highways are frequently associated with impaired driving. Alcohol and drugs can significantly affect judgment, reaction time, and a driver’s ability to recognize roadway direction and traffic signage. When impairment is involved, wrong-way collisions often result in devastating consequences for innocent motorists.

Evidence and the Ongoing Investigation

Establishing fault in a wrong-way crash requires careful review of physical and testimonial proof. Law enforcement typically evaluates roadway evidence, vehicle damage patterns, toxicology testing, and witness statements.

Key evidence in cases like this often includes the official accident report, which may document suspected impairment, citations issued, and preliminary findings.

In serious or fatal collisions, investigators often rely on crash reconstruction analysis to determine vehicle speeds, angles of impact, and how the vehicles moved prior to the collision. This type of analysis is especially important in wrong-way crashes where insurers may later attempt to dispute liability.

Legal Options After a Fatal Wrong-Way Crash

When a wrong-way crash results in death, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. These civil claims are separate from any criminal proceedings and focus on financial accountability for the harm caused by negligent conduct.

Damages in wrongful death cases can include economic damages such as funeral expenses and lost financial support, as well as non-economic damages for loss of companionship and the emotional impact of the death.  Given the indication that intoxication played a part in the crash, a claim for gross negligence may also be brought, which would allow the recovery of punitive damages.

All civil claims are subject to the applicable statute of limitations, making early evaluation important even while investigations are ongoing.

Why Early Legal Guidance Matters

Wrong-way crash cases often involve overlapping criminal investigations, insurance coverage disputes, and technical accident analysis. Insurance carriers may attempt to limit exposure despite clear evidence of negligence, particularly when fatal injuries are involved.

Understanding the litigation process, preserving evidence early, and identifying all responsible parties are critical steps in protecting a family’s rights after a fatal highway crash.
