Pilot Killed After Ultralight Aircraft Crashes in Wooded Area of Hollywood, Maryland

by | Mar 1, 2026 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

A fatal aviation accident occurred on the morning of February 28, 2026, in Hollywood, Maryland, after a small ultralight aircraft crashed in a wooded area. First responders, including Maryland State Police, deputies with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, and emergency medical services, responded following reports of an aircraft incident near Dorsey Park on Hollywood Road.

St. Mary’s County Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a small plane had gone down in the area. During the search effort, additional information came in from a citizen who reported hearing an engine cut out and believing they saw a crash. Authorities and responders used that information to narrow the search between Hollywood Road and St. Johns Road.

Deputies located the downed aircraft at approximately 10:14 a.m., and responders arrived shortly thereafter to confirm the crash. Authorities reported the pilot was the sole occupant of the aircraft and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The pilot’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Officials also stated no crash-scene photos would be released.

The incident remains under investigation. The Maryland Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified, and the investigation is continuing with multiple agencies involved.

What Makes Ultralight Aircraft Incidents Different

This incident involved an ultralight aircraft. Reports from local officials noted that the aircraft was not on radar, and authorities described it as an ultralight aircraft that does not require a tail number or beacon/transponder.

Because these aircraft can operate without many of the tracking tools commonly associated with other flights, early response and location efforts may depend heavily on eyewitness information and rapid coordination between agencies.

Investigation Focus After a Fatal Ultralight Crash

Preliminary reports indicate the cause of the crash remains under investigation. In fatal aviation incidents, investigators often work to establish the sequence of events, the aircraft’s condition, and whether any mechanical or operational issues contributed to the outcome.

When investigative agencies become involved, families may later see early factual summaries or interim findings that help outline what is known while the investigation remains ongoing. In aviation matters, those initial findings can be a starting point for evaluating causation and identifying what questions still require answers.

Even when there is limited public information early on, preserved documentation and witness accounts can matter. Aviation cases may involve technical review, records requests, and expert analysis that can take time to develop.

Legal Options After a Fatal Aviation Accident

A fatal crash involving a single-occupant aircraft can still raise legal questions depending on the circumstances, including potential issues involving mechanical condition, maintenance practices, or other contributing factors that may come to light during the investigation.

Families facing a sudden loss often need clear guidance on what legal rights may exist, what deadlines apply, and what information should be preserved. In certain situations, a wrongful death claim may be considered as more facts are confirmed.
