Students and Parent Hospitalized After Class Trip Bus Crash in Maryland

by | Jun 8, 2026 | Auto Accident, Personal Injury, Tour Bus Accident

Five eighth-grade students and one parent chaperone were taken to a hospital after a bus crash in Maryland involving a school trip group returning from Washington, D.C. The students were from Paxton Buckley Loda Junior High School in Central Illinois.

According to school officials, the students were traveling on a Peoria Charter bus when another bus, not affiliated with the school group, struck their bus from behind in Myersville, Maryland.

School officials reported that five students and one parent chaperone were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. By Saturday afternoon, all six had been discharged and rejoined the group for the trip home.

Another Peoria Charter bus was sent to the scene to transport the remaining students and chaperones back to Illinois.

Rear-End Bus Crashes Can Cause Serious Injuries

A rear-end collision involving large passenger buses can be dangerous even when the initial injuries appear limited. The force of impact may throw passengers forward, cause sudden neck and back movement, or lead to injuries that are not immediately obvious at the scene.

Students and chaperones on a bus may not be braced for impact, especially during a long class trip. Sudden impacts can cause headaches, neck pain, back pain, shoulder injuries, dizziness, or other symptoms that may worsen after the initial shock fades.

Why Medical Evaluation Matters After a Bus Crash

It is important that injured passengers receive immediate medical attention after a bus accident. Some injuries may not be fully apparent until hours or days later, especially soft tissue injuries, concussions, and back injuries.

Medical documentation can also help establish what injuries were reported soon after the crash. In cases involving children, prompt evaluation is especially important because students may have difficulty describing symptoms or may downplay pain in the moment.

Issues Investigators May Review

Investigators will likely examine how the second bus came to strike the school group’s bus from behind. Important questions may include whether the driver was following too closely, failed to react to slowing traffic, was distracted, or failed to maintain control.

Investigators may also review the condition of the striking bus. Questions involving bus maintenance can become important when a commercial passenger vehicle is involved in a crash. Brakes, tires, lights, and other systems may need to be inspected to determine whether the bus was safe to operate.

If mechanical problems are suspected, investigators may also evaluate whether brake failure played any role in the collision. At this stage, no cause has been confirmed, and the investigation will determine what factors contributed to the crash.

Passenger Safety on School Trips

School trips often involve long-distance travel, multiple buses, and careful coordination between schools, charter companies, and travel organizers. Passenger safety depends on proper planning, qualified drivers, safe vehicles, and appropriate supervision throughout the trip.

For long trips, load management may also be relevant. Passenger placement, luggage storage, and overall bus loading can affect safety during travel and emergency situations.

When a bus carrying students is involved in a crash, parents often need clear answers about what happened, who was responsible, and whether preventable safety failures contributed to the incident.

Evidence That May Help Explain the Crash

Important evidence may include police reports, driver statements, witness accounts, photographs, onboard camera footage, maintenance records, trip records, and data from the buses involved.

The official accident report may provide additional details about the vehicles, roadway conditions, drivers, and responding officers’ findings.

Determining causation may require reviewing both driver conduct and the condition of the vehicles involved.

Potential Legal Issues After a Bus Accident

Bus crash claims may involve multiple parties, including the driver, the bus company, maintenance providers, trip organizers, or other entities depending on the facts. When students are injured during a school trip, families may need help understanding what records should be preserved and what questions should be asked.

Injured passengers may be able to pursue compensation for medical expenses, pain, suffering, and other losses. Depending on the severity of injuries, claims may include economic damages and non-economic damages.
