A worker suffered serious injuries after an industrial incident involving a sulfuric acid tank at a chemical manufacturing facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, on June 6, 2026.
According to reports, emergency responders were dispatched to DyStar Carolina Chemical along Wilkinson Boulevard shortly after 10:15 a.m. Initial reports indicated a possible explosion at the facility. Authorities later stated that a worker employed by a third-party contractor was injured while attempting to decommission a sulfuric acid tank.
Officials reported that the worker was drilling into the tank when a pressurized reaction occurred. The reaction caused sulfuric acid to spray from the tank, resulting in facial burns and eye injuries. The worker was treated at the scene before being transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Hazmat crews responded to contain and clean up the chemical release. No other injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.
Industrial Tank Decommissioning Can Present Serious Hazards
Removing chemical storage tanks from service often requires extensive planning and safety precautions. Even tanks that are no longer actively being used may contain residual chemicals, trapped pressure, or hazardous vapors that can create dangerous conditions for workers.
Investigators will likely examine what procedures were followed before work began and whether the tank had been properly isolated and prepared for decommissioning. They may also review whether workers were informed of any remaining hazards associated with the vessel.
Because the injured worker was reportedly employed by a contractor, investigators may evaluate potential issues involving third-party liability and the responsibilities shared between the contractor and facility operator.
Sulfuric Acid Exposure Can Cause Life-Altering Injuries
Sulfuric acid is one of the most commonly used industrial chemicals in manufacturing and processing operations. Direct exposure can cause severe chemical burns, permanent eye damage, respiratory injuries, and other serious medical complications.
Workers exposed to corrosive chemicals may suffer significant burn injuries that require emergency treatment, reconstructive procedures, and long-term rehabilitation. In severe cases, victims may experience permanent disfigurement and lasting physical limitations.
The extent of the worker’s injuries in this incident has not yet been disclosed.
Safety Procedures May Be Closely Examined
Industrial facilities commonly rely on written procedures designed to prevent unexpected releases of hazardous energy or chemicals. Investigators may review whether appropriate lockout/tagout procedures were implemented before work began and whether all personnel involved understood the risks associated with the project.
The investigation may also focus on communications between the facility and the contractor, training records, safety meetings, and any hazard assessments conducted before the work started.
Physical evidence from the tank, tools, and surrounding work area may help investigators determine exactly what caused the pressurized release.
Long-Term Consequences of Chemical Exposure
Workers who survive serious chemical incidents may face months or years of medical treatment. Depending on the severity of the injuries, victims may require specialized eye care, skin grafts, reconstructive procedures, and ongoing therapy.
Serious industrial injuries can also create claims for future medical care and loss of earning capacity if a worker is unable to return to the same occupation or perform the same duties as before the incident.
