Three fishermen were rescued on September 16, 2026, after abandoning a burning 65-foot fishing vessel approximately 25 nautical miles southwest of Nantucket, Massachusetts. According to U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, the crew of the F/V Hadley Ruth issued a distress call around 3:55 a.m. reporting that the vessel was on fire and that they were abandoning ship.
The Coast Guard dispatched an MH-60 helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod and a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Brant Point on Nantucket. Before Coast Guard crews reached the vessel, another fishing vessel in the area, the Lightning Bay, responded to the emergency and located all three fishermen aboard a life raft.
The Coast Guard said the fishermen were found safe and had no reported medical concerns. They were later returned to Point Judith, Rhode Island.
The Coast Guard also planned an overflight of the area to look for possible pollution and protect the marine environment. The cause of the fire had not been released.
