Offshore Louisiana Oil Spill

The US Coast Guard reports that on May 12, 2016, almost 90,000 gallons of crude oil leaked from a subsea flow line at a Shell Oil facility in the Gulf of Mexico, about 90 miles south of Timbalier Island off the Louisiana coast, leaving a miles-long oil sheen. The oil leaked from a line connecting four wells in the Green Canyon area of the Gulf. Response vessels are attempting to skim the oil off the water’s surface, and aerial observation of the slick is underway. At present, the full extent of damage to property and other effects are unknown.
