An explosion occurred in a steam plant at a West Haven, Connecticut VA Hospital on Friday.  Early reports indicate that the workers were repairing a leak at the steam plant, located next to the hospital.  Tragically, two people were killed, and three injured during the explosion.  It is unclear what caused the incident at this time.

Connecticut DVA Commissioner Thomas J. Saadi stated:

The Leadership and Staff of the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) are deeply saddened by the tragic accident at the Federal VA in West Haven and extend our condolences and prayers to the families of the victims and to our Federal colleagues who continue to care for Connecticut’s Veterans.

Steam plants can pose significant dangers both to workers at the facilities and to the general public.  When dangerous work is involved, extra precautions must be taken, especially when catastrophic explosions and fires can occur.  Although at this time it is not known what caused the explosion, safe plant operators must always ensure that equipment is regularly inspected and safely maintained.  Not only can an incident like this result in a catastrophic impact on the environment, but it can also result in a loss of life.
