by | Aug 26, 2021 | Maritime Law, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly incident on the cargo tanker GLOBAL LAKE on August 17, 2021.  At the time, the tanker was north of Algeria, en route to Cartagena, Colombia.  Reports indicate that a crew member of the vessel was cleaning a tank on board when he experienced a loss of oxygen.  The Captain and Bosun on board the vessel entered the tank as well in order to attempt rescue of the crew member.  Unfortunately, reports are that the two fell into the tank below, before also experiencing dizziness from the lack of oxygen.  All three were eventually brought to the deck, but ultimately lost their lives in this tragic incident.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  A fire broke out on the general cargo ship HAGLAND BORG on August 13, 2021.  A party boat on Lake Conroe, Texas capsized late on August 14, 2021.  There was a fire on board the fishing boat Baula X on August 17, 2021.  There was an explosion on board a vessel in Shelter Island, New York on August 20, 2021.  A small vessel capsized in Outer Banks, North Carolina on August 20, 2021.  There was a deadly accident involving a recreational boat on Lake Lewisville, Texas on August 22, 2021.  There was a deadly accident involving a vessel at Chatfield Reservoir, Colorado on August 22, 2021.

Safe maritime companies must perform regular maintenance and inspections in order to ensure the safety of their crew members.  When ship operators fail to conduct regular maintenance and inspection of the equipment on their vessels, dangerous incidents can result.  This not only puts the lives of hardworking seamen at risk, but can also endanger members of the public.

The reality, is that the lack of oxygen in tanks on vessels is a well-known hazard in the maritime industry.  The lack of oxygen in a confined space can be caused by many factors, including work being performed in the area, or gasses present in the tank.  The simple solution to prevent severe injury or death is for vessels to provide proper air-monitoring equipment to its crew members.
