Explosion on Bulk Carrier ZILOS

| Sep 3, 2021 | Maritime Law

There was an explosion on the bulk carrier ZILOS on August 31, 2021.  At the time, the vessel was east of Montevideo, Uruguay.  Early reports indicate the explosion occurred in the ship’s engine room.  It is unknown if any crew members were injured during the explosion and fire.  The ship remains adrift following the explosion.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  There was a deadly accident involving a vessel at Chatfield Reservoir, Colorado on August 22, 2021.  There was a fire on the fishing boat Siempre al Alba on August 23, 2021.  There was a fire on the cargo ship DELWIN MATTHEW on August 23, 2021.  There was a fire on board a recreational boat in Ocean City, Maryland on August 29, 2021.  There was an accident on the container ship EVER LIFTING on August 29, 2021.  There was a tragic vessel collision in the Savannah River in Georgia on August 29, 2021.  During Hurricane Ida, Noble failed to evacuate crew members from the Noble Globetrotter II.

Safe maritime companies must perform regular maintenance and inspections in order to ensure the safety of their crew members.  When ship operators fail to conduct regular maintenance and inspection of the equipment on their vessels, dangerous incidents can result.  This not only puts the lives of hardworking seamen at risk, but can also endanger members of the public.
