Explosion at Westlake Chemical South Plant in Sulphur, Louisiana

by | Jan 26, 2022 | Chemical Release, Industrial Accident, Personal Injury

There was an explosion at the Westlake Chemical South Plant in Sulphur, Louisiana on January 26, 2022.  Reports indicate an Ethylene Dichloride storage tank exploded at the plant.  Ethylene Dichloride is a chemical used in the production of plastic and vinyl products, which is certified as a human carcinogen by the EPA.  A shelter-in-place was ordered for nearby residents and schools following the explosion.  Six workers at the facility were injured in the explosion, with five being taken to local hospitals for treatment.  The explosion remains under investigation.

There have been a number of incidents at industrial and chemical plants.  There was an explosion at a construction materials plant in Hampshire, Illinois on January 21, 2022.  Two workers were injured in an explosion at a steel plant near Detroit, Michigan on January 19, 2022. A massive fire broke out at a plastics plant in Wharton, Texas on January 9, 2022.

Plants can pose significant dangers both to workers and to the general public.  When dangerous work is involved, extra precautions must be taken, especially when catastrophic fires or explosions can occur.
