Explosion at Westlake Chemical South Plant in Sulphur, Louisiana

There was an explosion at the Westlake Chemical South Plant in Sulphur, Louisiana on January 26, 2022.  Reports indicate an Ethylene Dichloride storage tank exploded at the plant.  Ethylene Dichloride is a chemical used in the production of plastic and vinyl products, which is certified as a human carcinogen by the EPA.  A shelter-in-place was ordered for nearby residents and schools following the explosion.  Six workers at the facility were injured in the explosion, with five being taken to local hospitals for treatment.  The explosion remains under investigation.
