There was a fire at a chemical plant in Passaic, New Jersey on January 14, 2022.  Over 200 firefighters battled the fire on which began on Friday night.  The property includes a facility from Majestic Industries as well as the Qualco chemical plant.  Reports indicate at least one person was hospitalized as a result of injuries.  So far the fire has not spread to chemicals at the property, which has avoided a call for mandatory evacuations.

There have been a number of incidents at industrial and chemical plants.  There was an explosion and fire at a chemical plant in Memphis, Tennessee on January 11, 2022.  There was an explosion at the Interplastic Corporation plastics plant in Covington, Kentucky on January 10, 2022.  A massive fire broke out at a plastics plant in Wharton, Texas on January 9, 2022.  There was an explosion and fire at ExxonMobil’s Baytown, Texas plant on December 23, 2021.

Plants can pose significant dangers both to workers and to the general public.  When dangerous work is involved, extra precautions must be taken, especially when catastrophic fires or explosions can occur.  Although at this time it is not known what caused this incident, safe plant operators must always ensure that equipment is regularly inspected and safely maintained.  Not only can an incident like this result in a catastrophic impact on the environment, but it can also result in a loss of life.
