Explosion on Product Tanker SMOOTH SEA 2

by | Mar 9, 2022 | Maritime Law, Personal Injury

There was an explosion and fire on the product tanker ship SMOOTH SEA 2 on March 9, 2022.  At the time of the explosion, the vessel was berthed at IRPC Co pier, Samut Parakan, Bangkok.  The vessel is believed to have had a cargo of gas or diesel oil on board.  The explosion occurred on the cargo deck and resulted in a fire on board.  One crew member was taken to a local hospital, and one remains missing at this time.  The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  There was a vessel collision between the Dominic S and the Marilyn M in the early morning of February 23, 2022.  The bulk carrier NAMURA QUEEN was hit by a missile on February 25, 2022.  There was an incident on the bulk carrier Richard Oldendorff on February 25, 2022.  The bulk carrier BANGLAR SAMRIDDHI was hit by a missile on March 2, 2022.  There was a recreational boating accident in Tennessee on March 2, 2022.  A pleasure boat capsized in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 5, 2022.  The fishing boat NJORD capsized in the North Sea on March 6, 2022.

Safe maritime companies must perform regular maintenance and inspections in order to ensure the safety of their crew members.  When ship operators fail to conduct regular maintenance and inspection of the equipment on their vessels, dangerous incidents can result.  This not only puts the lives of hardworking fishermen at risk, but can also endanger members of the public.  A safe shipping company must take into consideration the product on board their vessel, and mitigate all hazards related to it.  It goes without saying that a product of a potentially explosive material, in this instance diesel oil, must be handled with precaution.
