Incident on Bulk Carrier RICHARD OLDENDORFF

by | Mar 1, 2022 | Maritime Law, Personal Injury

There was an incident on the bulk carrier Richard Oldendorff on February 25, 2022.  At the time, the vessel was off the coast of Port Aransas, Texas.  Reports indicate that a crew member on board the cargo vessel was suffering from a leg infection.  The condition of the crew member was so severe that medical personnel recommended an emergency medevac.  Two Coast Guard vessels responded to the request, and assisted.  The crew member was taken to Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Shoreline for medical treatment.

The vessel is owned and operated by Gemany-based Oldendorff Carriers GmbH & Co.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  The Spanish fishing boat VILLA DE PITANXO sank off the coast of Newfoundland on February 15, 2022.  There was a fire on the cargo ship FELICITY ACE on February 16, 2022.  There was a vessel collision between the Dominic S and the Marilyn M in the early morning of February 23, 2022.  The bulk carrier NAMURA QUEEN was hit by a missile on February 25, 2022.

Safe maritime companies must regularly assess the geopolitical situation wherever their vessels are located.  The war in the Ukraine serves as a reminder that vessels and their crew members can get caught in the middle of a war.  This obligation is an ongoing one.  Because the risks across the world are rapidly evolving, a company can not simply ignore them.  While prior to a job it may be considered safe in a specific region, this can change rapidly.  When ship operators fail to conduct regular assessments, whether due to cost-cutting or incompetence, of the safety of their vessels, dangerous incidents can result.
