A fire broke out on a small boat at Millerton Lake, California on August 19, 2022.  At the time, the vessel was about to be put into the water when its engine was started.  A fire started during the process, burning multiple people standing around the boat.  One person was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  Two boats collided in the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway near Freeport, Texas on August 6, 2022.  There was a deadly boating accident in Decatur County, Tennessee on August 6, 2022.  A swimmer was struck by a boat in Canaan, New York on August 6, 2022.  There was a fire on board the landing craft WESTERN STAR on August 17, 2022.  A crew member was electrocuted on board the bulk carrier COSCO WUYISHAN on August 17, 2022.

A recreational boating accident can be the result of many factors, including: human error, weather conditions, equipment failure, poor maintenance practices, waves caused by other vessels, or a lack of equipment.  An incident can often be a result of a combination of the above factors.  Ultimately though, many of these incidents are preventable.  Over 5,000 boating accidents occur each year, resulting in over 700 deaths. However, most of these accidents are preventable if boaters take the proper precautions.
