Lawsuit Filed after Offshore Amputation Injury

A lawsuit was recently filed suit on behalf of a worker who sustained an amputation injury on a platform in the Gulf of Mexico.  At the time, the worker was instructed to move a 6-foot diameter steel wheel from one side of the platform to the other via the use of the crane.  The Plaintiff sought guidance in how to safely perform this task, but was instructed to simply figure it out.  As a result, no lift plan was done, and no JSA occurred before the work.

They Plaintiff and another worker rigged up the large wheel and attempted to coordinate with the crane operator to perform the lift. Once the wheel had been moved to its final location, Plaintiff and the rigger attempted to put it down safely.  At the time, the wheel was hanging vertically, standing upright on the deck. Instead of lowering the piece of equipment to the deck in a controlled manner, the rigger decided to simply take the strap off, and let it fall down to the deck. The rigger undid the strap, the wheel fell, and the Plaintiff was unable to avoid it. His left foot was crushed, ultimately resulting in amputation injuries.

The lawsuit brings claims against Cox Operating (the operator of the offshore platform), Crosby Energy Services (the employer of the crane operator), and Quality Construction & Production (the employer of the rigger) arising out of the incident.
