by | Oct 6, 2022 | Maritime Law

There was a fire on the offshore supply tug AEGEAN STAR on October 6, 2022.  At the time, the vessel was at the Port of Alexandroupolis, Greece.  During the incident, a fire broke out on the engine room of the vessel.  Multiple vessels assisted in fire fighting efforts at the port.  It is unclear if anyone was injured during the fire.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  A crew member sustained a chemical burn on the container ship TAYMA EXPRESS on September 23, 2022.  Many companies evacuated workers from the Gulf of Mexico in anticipation of Hurricane Ian.  There was a deadly collision between two recreational boats in Hastings, Minnesota on September 29, 2022.  A scaffolder fell off of a platform at Kiewit Offshore Services into La Quinta Channel in Corpus Christi, Texas on October 1, 2022.  There was a deadly mass poisoning event on the bulk carrier WU ZHOU 8 on September 30, 2022.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  This is especially so when working on a large ship. Safe maritime companies must ensure that their ships do not put the lives of their crew members at risk.  Safe maritime companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, as well as ensuring its crew members are adequately trained.
