There was a deadly mass poisoning event on the bulk carrier WU ZHOU 8 on September 30, 2022.  At the time, the vessel was in the Gulf of Thailand.  During the incident, all twenty-one crew members are believed to have suffered from food poisoning.  The source of the poisoning is unknown.  Ten crew members died on board the vessel, before rescue vessels could assist the ship.  The remaining twelve crew were taken by the rescue vessel to a hospital in Con Dao Islands.  Two more crew members have since died.  Nine crew members remain hospitalized.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this deadly incident.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  There was a deadly boating accident on Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana on September 22, 2022.  There was a fire on the crude oil tanker ship ALEXIA on September 22, 2022.  There was an explosion and fire on the cargo ship OCEAN HARMONY on September 23, 2022.  A crew member sustained a chemical burn on the container ship TAYMA EXPRESS on September 23, 2022.  Many companies evacuated workers from the Gulf of Mexico in anticipation of Hurricane Ian.  There was a deadly collision between two recreational boats in Hastings, Minnesota on September 29, 2022.  A scaffolder fell off of a platform at Kiewit Offshore Services into La Quinta Channel in Corpus Christi, Texas on October 1, 2022.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  This is especially so when working on a large ship. Safe maritime companies must ensure that their ships do not put the lives of their crew members at risk.  Safe maritime companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, as well as ensuring its crew members are adequately trained.
