The container ship CMA CGM VERACRUZ became disabled on January 19, 2023.  At the time, the ship was en route to New Orleans, Louisiana, approaching Southwest Pass.  The ship is now drifting southwest in the Gulf of Mexico.  It is not clear what caused the vessel to be disabled.  Additional information has not yet been released.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  There was a fire on a commercial shrimp boat in Corpus Christi, Texas on January 15, 2023.  There was an explosion and fire on the tanker vessel SMOOTH SEA 22 on January 17, 2023.  The dredge W.B. Wood capsized on the Mississippi River near Meraux, Louisiana on January 16, 2023.  A boat capsized on Keith Lake in Jefferson County, Texas on January 17, 2023.  A pontoon boat capsized on Lake Seminole in Georgia on January 18, 2023.  The tug boat SEA VOYAGER sank on January 19 or 20, 2023.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe ship owners and operators must ensure that their pipelines do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.
