Dredge W.B. Wood Capsizes on Mississippi River near Meraux, Louisiana

by | Jan 17, 2023 | Maritime Law

The dredge W.B. Wood capsized on January 16, 2023.  At the time, the vessel was working on the Mississippi River near Meraux, Louisiana.  According to reports, there were at least two crew members on the dredge who were rescued by a nearby tug boat.  The river was briefly closed to traffic following the incident.  It is unclear if any of the crew members on the boat were injured.  The boat is operated by Wood Resources.  Oil cleanup operations are currently underway.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  There was a carbon monoxide poisoning on board the general cargo ship REGGEBORG on December 25, 2022.  A pipeline located near the Flint Hills Resources Ingleside facility ruptured in Corpus Christi Bay on December 25, 2022.  There was a fire on a commercial shrimp boat in Corpus Christi, Texas on January 15, 2023.  There was an explosion and fire on the tanker vessel SMOOTH SEA 22 on January 17, 2023.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe pipeline owners and operators must ensure that their pipelines do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.
