Six Crew Members Killed on Tanker Ship HALIMA

by | Feb 7, 2023 | Maritime Law, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly incident on board the tanker ship HALIMA on February 4, 2023.  At the time, the ship was at anchorage in Lagos, Nigeria.  Six crew members have been reported killed after cleaning tanked on board the tanker.  The workers are believed to have been exposed to toxic fumes.  Accidents like this one are known hazards in maritime work, and vessel operators must have adequate safety rules in place to prevent them.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  There was a deadly boating accident near Port O’Connor, Texas on January 28, 2023.  There was a fire on board the container ship CAPE CORTIA on January 30, 2023.  There was a deadly incident on board the general cargo ship IBRAHIM SIMSEK on February 1, 2023.  There was an explosion on board the bulk carrier ORIENTAL GLORY on February 2, 2023.  There was a fire on board the car carrier AH SHIN on February 3, 2023.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe ship owners and operators must ensure that their vessels do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.

The reality, is that the lack of oxygen in tanks on vessels is a well-known hazard in the maritime industry.  The lack of oxygen in a confined space can be caused by many factors, including work being performed in the area, or gasses present in the tank.  The simple solution to prevent severe injury or death is for vessels to provide proper air-monitoring equipment to its crew members.
