There was a deadly incident on the bulk carrier KANG HUAN on March 28, 2023.  At the time, the boat was at anchorage in Bangladesh.  During a lifeboat drill on board the vessel, the lifeboat was released into the water.  There were 16 crew members on board.  15 crew were rescued, but the Chief Engineer went missing.  The bulk carrier is owned and operated by COSCO Shipping Bulk Co Ltd.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  The research vessel PETREL capsized in dry dock on March 22, 2023.  The bulk carrier DYNAMIC STRIKER struck a concrete pier in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic on March 25, 2023.  On March 26, 2023, the product tanker MONJASA REFORMER was boarded by pirates.  A recreational boat capsized in Hoover Reservoir in Ohio on March 25, 2023.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe ship owners and operators must ensure that their vessels do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.
