There was a fire on board the fishing vessel KALTAN on April 21, 2023.  At the time, the ship was in the Japan Sea, southeast of Ulsan, South Korea.  Search and rescue operations occurred after the fire broke out.  Coast Guard vessels were able to rescue 21 out of 25 crew members.  Four crew members remain missing at this time.  It is unclear what caused the fire.  Additional details have not yet been released.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  A fire broke out on an offshore oil platform in a field off the coast of Trinidad on April 10, 2023.  A passenger fell from her balcony on the cruise ship VALIANT LADY on April 2, 2023.  On April 10, 2023, the product tanker SUCCESS 9 was boarded by pirates.  A fire broke out on the tanker vessel TIGER SEA on April 17, 2023.  The container ship MONA LISA struck multiple gantry cranes while in port on April 20, 2023.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe offshore vessel owners and operators must ensure that their ships do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.
