Fire on Cargo Ship LOTTA

by | Jun 27, 2023 | Maritime Law

There was a fire on board the general cargo ship LOTTA on June 27, 2023.  At the time, the vessel was at port in Lorien, France.  The vessel was carrying a load of sunflower cake.  The cargo began smoldering in the hold, but is not in open fire.  Firefighting efforts are limited due to stability concerns with the vessel.  It is unclear if any crew members were injured by the fire.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  A vessel sank in the Corpus Christi Ship Channel on June 9, 2023.  A tour boat capsized in Lockport, New York on June 12, 2023.  There was an oil discharge from a barge in the tow of a Kirby Inland Marine vessel on the Mississippi River near Natchez, Mississippi on June 10, 2023.  A submersible touring the Titanic went missing on June 18, 2023.  There was a deadly boating accident in Lake Six, Minnesota on June 22, 2023.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe offshore vessel owners and operators must ensure that their ships do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.
