by | Jul 22, 2023 | Maritime Law

The container ship MAERSK HOUSTON broke free from her moorings on July 19, 2023.  At the time, the vessel was at Koper Port, Slovenia.  After breaking free, the vessel drifted towards a passenger terminal located across the water.  Multiple tug ships were able to control the vessel, and return her to the berth.  The vessel’s registered owner is Moller Singapore AP Pte Ltd.  The ship’s operator is Maersk A/S.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  A recreational boat collided with a barge near Galveston, Texas on July 4, 2023.  A party boat capsized on Lake Conroe in Texas on July 4, 2023.  A fishing boat capsized near Point Au Fer Island, Louisiana on July 13, 2023.  A small fishing boat caught fire in Gloucester, Massachusetts on July 17, 2023.  A fishing boat caught fire in Delaware Bay on July 18, 2023.  The container ship ANGEL capsized and sank on July 21, 2023.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe offshore vessel owners and operators must ensure that their ships do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.
