There was a chemical release at the Altivia complex in La Porte, Texas on December 4, 2023. Reports indicate chemical phosgene was release at the facility, resulting in a shelter-in-place being ordered for those near the plant. Eight workers who were exposed to the chemical were hospitalized following the incident. At this time it is believed the chemical leak was caused by a pressure release device which ruptured.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, exposure to the gas may result in irritation to the eyes, dry burning throat, vomiting, cough, foamy sputum, breathing difficulty, and chest pain.
