Explosion on Fishing Boat KIM THU

There was an explosion on the fishing boat KIM THU on April 26, 2024.  According to reports, an explosion occurred on the fishing boat while it was docked in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Five crew members are believed to have sustained burn injuries.  Additional details have not yet been released.

Explosions on commercial fishing vessels can occur under a variety of circumstances, particularly when work is being conducted in critical areas like the engine room. One common cause of such explosions is the ignition of flammable gases or vapors. Engine rooms often contain fuels, oils, and other combustible materials that can emit vapors, especially if containers are not sealed properly or if there are leaks in fuel lines or tanks. When these vapors mix with the air in confined spaces, they create an explosive atmosphere. If any source of ignition, such as sparks from electrical tools, open flames from welding equipment, or even static electricity, is present, it can ignite these vapors, leading to a powerful explosion.

Another potential cause of explosions in the engine room of a fishing vessel is mechanical failure or overheating of engine components. Engines, especially diesel engines, operate at high temperatures and pressures, and their components can fail if they are not properly maintained or if they are operated beyond their design limits. Overheating can occur due to a variety of reasons, including coolant system failure, blockages in the engine’s heat exchangers, or excessive loads being placed on the engine. Such overheating can lead to the failure of engine parts that may rupture under pressure, releasing hot gases or fluids that can ignite combustible materials nearby, resulting in an explosion.

Additionally, improper storage or handling of volatile substances like compressed gases or chemicals in the engine room can significantly increase the risk of an explosion. Commercial fishing vessels often use various chemicals for maintenance and operation, which can be highly reactive or flammable. If these substances are not stored in appropriate conditions, such as in well-ventilated areas away from sources of heat or ignition, or if they are mishandled during use, they can contribute to the onset of an explosive event. Ensuring that all materials are stored according to safety regulations and that safety procedures are strictly followed during any work in the engine room is crucial to prevent such dangerous incidents.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  A small boat capsized in the Sabine River in Orange County, Texas on March 31, 2024.  Two boats collided on Lake Iamonia in Leon County, Florida on April 7, 2024.  A crew member went overboard from the Holland America Line cruise ship ROTTERDAM on April 12, 2024.  A small boat capsized off the coast of San Francisco, California on April 14, 2024.  Two boats collided in Biscayne Bay in Florida on April 21, 2024.
