Recreational Boat Crashes into Jetty in Galveston, Texas

by | Jul 7, 2024 | Maritime Law, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly boat crash in Galveston, Texas on July 5, 2024.  According to reports, a boat with five people on board crashed into a jetty in north Galveston.  Three people were taken to a local hospital for care.  One body has been recovered, and one person remains missing at this time.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this deadly recreational boating accident.

The risk of a small boat crashing into a jetty at night is significantly heightened due to reduced visibility and navigational challenges. At night, the darkness makes it difficult for boat operators to see obstacles, including jetties, which can blend into the surrounding environment. Even with navigational lights, distinguishing a jetty from open water can be challenging, especially if the jetty is not well-lit or marked with reflective materials. This reduced visibility can lead to collisions, as boat operators may not realize they are approaching a jetty until it is too late to take evasive action.

Another contributing factor is the potential for navigational errors and misjudgments. Nighttime boating requires a higher level of skill and attention to detail, as boat operators must rely more on navigational aids such as GPS, charts, and compasses. If these tools are not used correctly, or if the operator is inexperienced or fatigued, the likelihood of making a navigational error increases. Additionally, the presence of other nocturnal hazards such as floating debris or unlit buoys can further complicate navigation, increasing the risk of a boat veering off course and colliding with a jetty.

Environmental conditions can also exacerbate the risk of a small boat crashing into a jetty at night. Adverse weather conditions such as fog, heavy rain, or rough seas can drastically reduce visibility and make it even more challenging to detect obstacles. These conditions can also impair the boat’s handling, making it harder for the operator to maneuver and avoid collisions. Strong currents and tides can push a boat towards a jetty more quickly than anticipated, leaving little time for corrective action. To mitigate these risks, boat operators should ensure their vessels are equipped with proper lighting and navigational aids, maintain a vigilant lookout, and exercise caution by reducing speed and avoiding risky conditions whenever possible.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  There was a deadly diving accident in Crane Lake, Minnesota on June 30, 2024.  A speed boat crashed into rocks near the Los Alamitos Bay jetty in Long Beach, California on July 3, 2024.  A small boat capsized near Galveston, Texas on July 4, 2024.  A crew member became entangled in fishing nets and went overboard from a commercial fishing boat in Bristol Bay, Alaska on July 5, 2024.
