Fishing Boat Three Girls Catches Fire Off Coast of New Hampshire

by | Aug 14, 2024 | Maritime Law

There was a fire on board the fishing trawler THREE GIRLS on August 11, 2024.  At the time, the fishing boat was off the coast of New Hampshire.  All six people on board the vessel were able to board a life raft when they abandoned the burning ship.  It is unclear if anyone was injured in the incident.  It is believed the fire began in the ship’s engine room.   Additional details have not been released.

The risk of a fire breaking out in a fishing boat’s engine room is a serious concern that all operators must take into account. The engine room, housing the vessel’s main power source, contains several elements that can easily ignite if proper precautions are not taken. Flammable fuels, lubricants, and electrical components are all present in this confined space, making it particularly vulnerable to fires. Even a small spark from faulty wiring or a leaking fuel line can quickly escalate into a full-blown blaze, threatening the safety of the crew and the integrity of the vessel.

Proper maintenance and regular inspections are key to minimizing the risk of fire in the engine room. Ensuring that fuel lines, electrical wiring, and machinery are in good condition can prevent many potential hazards. Additionally, keeping the engine room clean and free from debris or oil spills is essential, as these materials can easily catch fire and spread flames rapidly. Regularly checking for leaks and addressing them immediately can also reduce the likelihood of a fire starting. Fire suppression systems should be installed and routinely tested to ensure they are fully operational in case of an emergency.

In the unfortunate event that a fire does break out, having an emergency plan in place is critical. The crew should be well-trained in fire response procedures, including the use of fire extinguishers, the activation of suppression systems, and the proper evacuation protocols. Swift and coordinated action can prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the vessel and can save lives. Understanding the risks and being prepared can make all the difference in preventing a catastrophic event on a fishing boat.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  The shrimp boat Second Chance ran aground in Port Aransas on July 31, 2024.  There was an explosion on a small recreational boat on Lake Texoma in Oklahoma on August 4, 2024.  A boat with eight people on board capsized in the waters near Homer, Alaska on August 3, 2024, killing a family of four who were on vacation from Texas.  There was a fire on board the lift boat Brazos on August 11, 2024.  A boat collided with an inner tube on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia on August 10, 2024.
