Deadly Ferry Dock Collapse on Sapelo Island, Georgia

by | Oct 20, 2024 | Maritime Law, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly dock collapse in Sapelo Island, Georgia on October 19, 2024.  According to authorities, at least twenty people were thrown into water when a gangway at the Marsh Landing Dock collapsed.  The crowd had gathered as part of a celebration of the Gullah-Geechee culture on the island.  The walkway connected a dock where people could board a ferry with the shore.  At least seven people were killed, with many others having sustained injuries.  The cause of the collapse remains under investigation at this time.  Our thoughts and prayers to those impacted by this deadly incident.

The tragic collapse of the gangway at the Marsh Landing Dock on Sapelo Island, Georgia may have been caused by several factors, all of which are currently under investigation. One potential cause could be structural failure due to the age or condition of the gangway. Over time, wear and tear, corrosion, or wood rot can weaken the components of a dock or gangway, particularly when exposed to saltwater and harsh weather conditions. If routine maintenance and inspections were not performed, existing structural deficiencies could have gone unnoticed, ultimately leading to a collapse under the weight of the crowd.

Another possible cause is overloading of the gangway at the time of the incident. As a large number of people gathered on the walkway, the combined weight may have exceeded the gangway’s maximum capacity. Crowd density on the structure can significantly increase the stress on its support components. If the gangway was not designed to accommodate such a large number of people simultaneously, or if its weight limit was not clearly marked or enforced, it could have contributed to the sudden collapse.

Additionally, poor design or construction issues may have played a role in the gangway collapse. If the gangway was not built to current safety standards, used substandard materials, or had an inadequate support system, it would be more susceptible to failure. Even if the structure met design requirements when initially constructed, evolving safety standards and increased usage over time could have made the design outdated. Any weaknesses in the original construction or subsequent modifications to the gangway may have compromised its integrity, especially under the strain of a large crowd.

Environmental factors, such as recent weather events, may also have contributed to the collapse. Storms, heavy rains, or high winds in the days leading up to the incident could have weakened the gangway, especially if it had been subjected to flooding or strong wave action. Such conditions could accelerate deterioration of the gangway’s materials or erode the soil around its support structures, leading to instability. If the gangway had not been thoroughly inspected after adverse weather events, the extent of any damage or weakness might not have been known.

Human factors could also be a contributing cause, particularly if proper safety protocols were not in place. The organizers of the event, as well as those responsible for the maintenance and safety of the dock, may not have accounted for the large crowd expected during the celebration. Failure to control crowd access to the gangway, or the lack of visible warnings about the walkway’s capacity limits, could have placed additional stress on the structure. Moreover, if routine safety inspections were not conducted regularly, or if known safety issues were not promptly addressed, it may indicate negligence on the part of the responsible parties.

Lastly, the collapse could involve a combination of factors, where structural weaknesses, environmental conditions, and human errors together led to the incident. Investigators will likely examine the design and maintenance records of the gangway, interview witnesses, and analyze physical evidence to determine the precise cause. Understanding what led to this tragic event will be crucial in preventing similar accidents in the future and ensuring that other docks and walkways are safe for public use.
