Cause of PEMEX’s Abkatun Platform Fire Announced

Mexico’s Agencia de Seguridad, Energia y Ambiente (ASEA) has issued its report following an investigation into the deadly offshore platform fire on PEMEX’s Abkatun platform.  During the incident, four workers lost their lives, with sixteen injured.  Three workers went missing and were never recovered.

According to ASEA’s findings, the explosion was caused by a leak in a corroded gas line at the platform.  The corrosion was accelerated from what was expected because of micro-organisms and sulfuric acid present in the gas line.  Offshore oil companies must perform regular inspections and maintenance on their platforms.  When the condition of gas lines deteriorate, deadly explosions and fires can occur.  In a marine environment, rust and corrosion is exacerbated.  This is a risk that companies both know in advance, and must plan for.
