New reports released by the city of Surfside, Florida confirm there was major structural damage to the Champlain Towers South at least back in 2018. The reports come out as search and rescue operations at the residential building in Miami Beach continue in an attempt to locate any survivors following Thursday’s deadly building collapse. A 2018 engineering report identified “abundant cracking and spalling” of concrete columns, beams and walls in the building’s parking garage.
The engineering report also indicated that waterproofing of the pool deck needed to be repaired, and the damage was preventing water from properly draining. The report identified the risks of failing to make repairs:
The failed waterproofing is causing major structural damage to the concrete structural slab below these areas. Failure to replace the waterproofing in the near future will cause the extent of the concrete deterioration to expand exponentially.
At the time of the collapse, roofing work had begun on the condo building. Although the report identified numerous concerns with the condition of the building, it is unknown if they ultimately contributed to the collapse.
Presently, 5 people have been confirmed dead, with an additional 159 unaccounted for. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this tragedy.
